Intent, Implementation and Impact

Curriculum Intent

At Hollingworth Primary school our art curriculum promotes curiosity and a thirst for learning. It contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection.

The curriculum overview allows children to develop their understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of artists and designers throughout history.

Curriculum Implementation

Art is taught throughout EY. KS1 and KS2 ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum. We use the content of the National Curriculum to underpin teaching and learning. We plan opportunities for pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. Pupils are taught how to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. As a result, pupils become more proficient in drawing, painting and sculpture. We ensure that pupils know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Within our Early Years children are encouraged to explore, use their imagination, experiment, make decisions and create with increasing complexity. Our EY unit is equipped with an abundance of painting, printing, craft and drawing resources which children can access and have their learning enhanced by a skilled Practitioner.

In years 1-6, topics are sequenced in such a way to ensure progression of skills and variety in experience. Our exposure to art and artists coupled with the teaching of skills stimulates creativity and imagination. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our lives.

Curriculum Impact

Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. Achievements are celebrated in classrooms and corridors with displays.

Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design. Age related expectation levels are reported to parents at the end of the reception year.

Children in the Early Years have been using their own ideas and learning skills to allow them to create, explore and experiment in art.

In KS1 some children have explored the different effects that can be created with different mediums and considered how colour and texture can change an outcome.

Our Year 1 class have been creating sculptures in the woods using natural resources. They were inspired by Andrew Goldsworthy.

There are so many great artists. Children in KS2 have been discussing works of art and showcasing some of their own skills and ideas.
