Reading for Pleasure

Reading for pleasure is at the heart of our curriculum and is promoted throughout all subjects. Reading for pleasure at Hollingworth Primary School aims to establish each child as a lifetime reader.  Becoming a lifetime reader is based on developing a love of reading (Sanacore, 2002). Studies are accumulating that highlight the importance of reading for pleasure for both educational as well as personal development. These studies show that promoting reading can have a major impact on children, their future and their life chances.

Remember, to develop a love of reading, build vocabulary and comprehension knowledge, there is required amount of reads in a week.

Reading expectations at home

Years 1 & 2 - 10 minute sessions – 5 times a week

Years 3 & 4 - 15 minute sessions – 5 times a week

Year 5 - 20 minute sessions – 5 times a week

Year 6 - 30 minutes sessions – 5 times a week

This will establish good reading habits and improves reading stamina through the years.
